As someone who teaches in an academic program, the issue I hear from planners is the learning curve--the firm's software, files, compliance issues--as well as the time to properly mentor the intern make the process cost ineffective for a "small" shop. Advisors who hire such students are very valuable to the local college program and to the students--they get great experience. Ideally the student would and should add value--but if the internship is only for a semester or summer that is hard to accomplish. We may need internships lasting a year for the planner to get tangible value from the relationship. Other thoughts?
